Just a Small Snack

Just a Small Snack

I believe in moderation—that old saying, “Everything in moderation.” Not that I have always stuck to doing everything in moderation but I do believe in it. Now, I don’t know about you but I find snack time is the hardest moderation time for me. With the best of intentions, I leave my home office and head for the kitchen to scope out what is in the closet or fridge. Little voices from the not so good goodies call out to me enticingly and my good intentions fly right out the window. So, I have started making sure I have specific good snacks available all the time and leave my intentions in the office. I am keeping moderation with me.

Every now and then, I am going to show what snacks I purposefully eat and enjoy with moderation. I am not going to deny and starve myself of food items. It just does not work for me. I am going to make moderation my best friend. My support buddy. And, if moderation was not with me that day, I will step forward and still bring moderation with me. No beating myself up over a momentary lapse in friendship.

Today’s snack is a simple one. Peanuts and chocolate chips. Although I am not a huge fan of nuts I figure they are better for me than eating a bag of chips or candy bar. Plus, the chocolate chips kill any craving I might have.

bowlsI use a very small bowl. I mean a very, very small bowl. Someone gave me a gift once of four silicone bowls typically used to hold spices or small items which have been measured out to be used in a recipe. My snack ends up being roughly an ounce of peanuts and chocolate chips along with an 8 oz. glass of water. You may think this is nothing and won’t work for you. Eat the snack pieces one by one and wait 20 minutes before you decide to eat anything else. Most of the time I find myself no longer hungry and the cravings are gone. If I am still truly hungry after 20 minutes, a piece of fruit does the trick!

Do not eat peanuts or chocolate if you have allergies to these foods.

Monday Morning Breakfast

Monday Morning Breakfast

I had one of my favorite breakfasts, today. Kind of a go to because it is so simple to put together and I know I am eating healthy. I don’t like the mess I have to clean up afterward when making a smoothie. Nor, do I like the seeds that seem to always get stuck in my teeth when drinking it. This way I find easier for me to clean up and not as many seeds getting stuck.

A bowl of oatmeal topped with vanilla yogurt. Most of the time I have fresh berries to put on top but not today. I was out of berries. Time to go shopping for fresh fruit and veggies. Anyway, I use about a quarter cup of dry oatmeal, add water to cover the oats and pop the bowl into the microwave for two minutes on high. When done I mix the oats a bit then add about two big tables spoons of the vanilla yogurt. Voilá! Three minutes total and done. And it is delicious. Give it a try sometime. You just might like it.

A great way to start my day with a meal that will keep me feeling full throughout the morning. Plus, I like knowing I am doing something healthy for me with my food. I find this is a positive boost mentally that lasts and pushes me to stay true to myself.
